Promo cards sometimes have 'sample', 'promo' or some other printing across the back to differentiate them from normal issue cards. They are usually advance printings sent to retail outlets to give them an idea of what they will be ordering. Sometimes, the stats are not up to date. Sometimes, they have been issued special numbers like: SP1, PC1 or the like. They generally are in much shorter supply than regular issued cards.
